「家」字延伸學習 Chinese vocabulary study of 家

「家」是一個會意字。是和孩子息息相關,最貼身的一個字,在基礎漢字500課程的第一冊就出現了。除了最基本的意思之外,「家」還有不少其他的用法和含意。

One of the first characters taught in the Basic Chinese 500 course is 家. This is a word that is very relatable to a child. While its basic meaning is “home” or “family”, this character has a much broader use.

讓我們來看兩個字:

家   豬

你會發現這兩個字有一個共同的部件:

豕,本來就是指豬。(現代「豬」字右邊的「者」是後來加上去的。) 豬為我們的先祖提供了食物的基本保障,因此古人認為光是頭頂有蓋並不足夠,必須要養有一頭豬,才能算是築起了個家。

家 shares a common part with 豬 (pig): 豕。This part originally means “pig”. The  者 on the right side of the modern-day character 豬 was added at a later time. Pig provided food security to our ancestors. As a result, they believed that having a roof above our heads was not enough to build a home. One also needs a pig.

起初的「家」字,屋蓋下面是一頭豬。

「家」的重要性 The importance of 家

子曰: 修身、齊家、治國、平天下。
一級級遞進的修為之道。家,僅次於自身,可見家的重要性。

We have the saying “ 修身、齊家、治國、平天下 ” (from Confucius) which sets out the priorities in one’s journey of self cultivation and life achievement:

  • 修身 Cultivate one’s moral character;
  • 齊家 Manage one’s household in an orderly manner;
  • 治國 Rule the country well;
  • 平天下 Bring peace to the world.

家 being second in the sequence makes it of great importance to our life-long practice.

「家」的其他含意 Beyond the basic meaning

「家」有「專家」的含意,比如以下的名稱:

家 means a specialist or an expert. Below are some examples

  • 專家 (specialist)
  • 畫家 (painter)
  • 音樂家 (musician)
  • 科學家 (scientist)
  • 政治家 (politician)
  • 作家 (writer)

家 as a classifier (量詞)

「家」也是一個量詞,用來數商店、公司、門戶。以下是一些例子。

家 is also a classifier. It is used for counting shops, companies, or families. For example,

  • 一家戲院 (1 cinema)
  • 兩家人家 (2 families)
  • 三家餐廳 (3 restaurants)
  • 四家公司 (4 companies)
  • 五家醫院 (5 hospitals)

Being such a useful word, it is no wonder that it is taught in the very first book of Beginning Reader of the Basic Chinese 500 course.
