Start to read independently with these short comic stories, all written in characters that the child has learnt from Basic Chinese 500 course. The stories in this series include history, classic, language learning, science, humour, and more.

Each story comes with some background information. It would be a great opportunity for parents to engage children in related discussions.

左 is left, 右 is right. 左右為難 is an idiom which means dilemma.

This idiom can also be interpreted at its face value: when someone is stuck in the middle between two conflicts coming from left and right. Parents can often be in 左右為難 situations when we are asked to play judge in children’s arguments. This interpretation can be helpful for younger children to learn the idiom as it is vivid and relatable to them.

There are quite a few idioms that contain the characters 左 and 右, such as:

  • 左右逢源 – to benefit from both sides
  • 左右開弓 – to display ambidexterity
  • 左鄰右里 – neighbours
  • 左閃右躲 – to duck out or avoid
  • 左思右想 – to think through from different angles
  • 左顧右盼 – glancing left and right
  • 左耳入 右耳出 – in one ear and out the other
  • 男左女右 – (traditional saying) the left is for males, the right is for females
