Teaching your children proper Chinese grammar is a vital part of Chinese fluency. However, teaching children grammar doesn’t have to be tedious or boring. Today’s activities will focus on classifiers which count nouns, because it is a very simple way to make your children sound more like native speakers.

ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

Since most non-native speakers default to the classifier 個/gè/ for everything, we will slowly introduce different classifiers to your children via three simple activities.

ACTIVITIY 1 - Matching Classifiers
(age 3+, single / multi player)
WHAT YOU NEED 道具
HOW TO PREPARE 準備
  • Pull out or write 3-5 classifier word cards
  • Pull out or write 3-5 character cards that go with each classifier
  • Mix the character cards up and put face down
HOW TO PLAY 玩法
  1. Place the 3-5 classifier word cards face up.
  2. Have the first player choose a character card and read it.
  3. Then, have the first player place the character card with the appropriate classifier word card.
  4. Switch to next player (or alternatively, have the child keep going) until they’re done with the pile.

Depending on the age of your child, you can increase or decrease the difficulty level of the activity by using pictures instead of character cards to match the classifier cards; having more character cards and/or classifier word cards; and adding multi-character words. If your children are really young, you may want to use picture cards instead of character cards.

For your older kids, you may can have them earn bonus points by suggesting additional characters for the classifier word cards.

ACTIVITIY 2 - Classifiers BINGO
(age 3+, single / multi player)
WHAT YOU NEED 道具
  • Sheets of paper
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Tokens (eg: coins, buttons, stones, chips, etc.)
HOW TO PREPARE 準備
  • Make a grid of 3×3 up to 5×5 (like a BINGO card) (multiple sheets)
  • Pull out or write 10-15 classifier word cards
  • Fill in the grid with a variety of characters that pair with the 10-15 classifier words cards (different characters or arrangement for each sheet)
  • Put the 10-15 classifier word cards in a bowl or mix them up.
HOW TO PLAY 玩法
  1. Have each player choose a BINGO sheet
  2. Pull out a classifier from the bowl or deck.
  3. Say the classifier out loud (or, for a harder version, have your child read it)
  4. Each player will look at their BINGO sheet and look for characters that would go with the classifier and place a token on the character. There can be more than one token placed per classifier depending on how the sheets are created.
  5. First person to place a token on every square (or have a full vertical/horizontal/diagonal row) wins.

Depending on the age of your child, you can increase or decrease the difficulty level of the activity by using a bigger or smaller grid, characters that can be paired with multiple classifiers, or adding classifiers. If your children are really young, you may want to use pictures instead of characters on the BINGO sheets.

ACTIVITIY 3 - Joining Classifiers
(age 3+, single / multi player)
WHAT YOU NEED 道具
  • 思展閱讀練習卡 (或自製字卡) Basic Chinese 500 Study Cards (or make your own)
  • (optional) sheets of paper
  • String, sticks, pencils
HOW TO PREPARE 準備
  • Pull out and place 3-5 classifier word card in one column (or write on a sheet of paper)
  • Pull out or write 3-5 character cards that go with each classifier in another column (or write on a sheet of paper)
  • MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE THE TWO COLUMNS ALREADY PAIRED.
HOW TO PLAY 玩法
  1. Have the first player match a set of measure word with the correct character using the string (or drawing a line on the paper)
  2. Either have the child continue until they’re done matching or take turns with other players.

Again, depending on the age of your child, you can increase or decrease the difficulty level of the activity by using pictures instead of character cards to match the classifier word cards; increasing the number of character cards and/or classifier word cards; and adding multi-character words. If your children are really young, you may want to use picture cards instead of character cards.

You can also increase the difficulty level by having more classifiers than character cards or vice versa.

HOMESCHOOLING TIPS

Don’t let perfection get in the way of good enough.

Many of our activities can seem intimidating if you tend towards perfectionism. But truthfully, they can be done in a quick and slapdash sort of manner. If you note, the BINGO card made was not fancy – it was just handwritten on a piece of paper.

Do what you need to get something done. Don’t worry about how pretty it is or “should be.” If your child can understand or use it, it’s perfect.
