Homeschooling Tips to Consider in 2023

As a homeschooling parent, you have the unique opportunity to help your child develop into an independent learner. You can take advantage of your child’s interest in a topic and teach them things they might not have learned in school, even while following a school curriculum.

If you’re new to homeschooling or considering starting it up with your young child, you’re in the right place. In this post, we’ll discuss some tips to help make the transition as smooth as possible in 2023.

Start With Your Child's Learning Style

  • What is your child’s learning style?
  • How can you help your child learn best?
  • How can you help them learn differently?

There are a number of ways that children learn, but it’s important to know how your child best learns. The most common learning styles include: visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

Some examples include:

Visual learner – These are people who would benefit from having pictures or diagrams in an otherwise plain text document or email. They may also need some visual reminders when learning new material because they don’t read well without visuals present.

Auditory learner – Those with this type of learning style tend to do better when they hear something rather than read about it or even see images on a screen (unless those images are accompanied by sound). If someone is trying very hard to understand something but cannot retain the information after reading about it once or twice, then chances are good that he/she may be an auditory learner instead!

Kinesthetic learner – People who prefer hands-on activities tend not only enjoy, but also retain more easily, what they learned through such activities.

Create a Routine

Creating a routine can benefit your family in many ways. It will not only help you to be more efficient with your time, but it can also help your children to become more independent and confident. This also applies to homeschooling.

If you want to start homeschooling and have no idea where to begin, then creating a routine is an excellent place to start. The most important thing about having a routine is that everyone has their own part in it. When you are able to establish routine with your everyday life, it becomes much simpler to do the same for homeschooling.

Take Advantage of Resources for Homeschoolers

Many parents who homeschool are connected, and they’re a great resource for information. You can find support from other homeschooling families, share ideas and resources with each other, and make your learning journey easier by sharing challenges.

Set Up The Right Environment

There are two main considerations when setting up the right environment for your child.

  • First, you need to make sure that the place where they will do their schoolwork is appropriate.
  • Second, you need to consider how they will feel while they’re in that environment.

You need to ensure that your child feels inspired in the environment where they are learning. They need to love where they are at in order to love the information they are consuming. If their learning corner makes them feel tired, uninspired, or they simply don’t like it, be open to their suggestions.

Consider Options for Socialization

Homeschooling is a wonderful way to give your children the education they need, but it can also leave them feeling isolated. Make sure that you plan out ways for your child to interact with other people in their community, as well as parents like yourself who are homeschooling. Many cities have homeschooling groups that meet regularly and offer opportunities for both children and adults to socialize.

Be sure to include outings with other students and friends who are also homeschooling. While homeschooling provides many families with convenience and consistency, it should never completely replace human interaction.

Remember That You Are Not Alone

This can be a big change for you and your family. While homeschooling can be daunting, you are not alone!

Remember that there are many communities and resources available to help you during your child’s learning journey this year. There are tons of Facebook groups, websites with advice from other parents who have been through it all before, and even local meet-ups where you can meet other moms who homeschool their children.

Important Tips to Remember

Now that you have some tips and tricks to set you up for success with homeschooling in 2023, here are a few more tips to consider.

  • Give yourself a fair chance. Things don’t always work out the first time, and that’s normal.
  • Be creative, even if you follow a curriculum, feel free to add your own twist to the learning activities.
  • Proactively ask your child how they feel. You are doing this for them, and their feedback will be instrumental to your planning and creative process.

Homeschooling is a great way to give your child the chance to learn in an environment that works best for them. You can find resources, such as tutors and curriculum, to help make the process easier on yourself. The most important thing is that you take the time to figure out what works best for your family and that you give it a fair chance.
