How to Set Language Learning Goals

When you’re learning a new language, it can be easy to get distracted and want to learn everything at once. After all, there’s so much more to language than just grammar! But if you don’t have clear goals for what you want to achieve and when, then it’s easy for your learning efforts to dissolve into vague aspirations like “I’m going to learn this someday.”

That’s why setting language learning goals is one of the most important parts of the process—it helps ensure that you’re focused on achieving something concrete rather than wasting time on nebulous ambitions. Read this blog post to learn some of the best strategies to set language learning goals.

Self-Evaluation & Professional Evaluation

Having an idea of where you or your child stands in terms of your level of knowledge is essential. At Sagebooks, we can help place your child in the perfect program. Answer a few questions here. In addition, here are some general questions you can ask yourself when starting out.

  • Do you have a general idea of what areas of the language you’d like to work on? When you think about your own strengths and weaknesses, what are some specific skills that could use improvement?
  • Are there any challenges in setting goals related to your current level of proficiency in this language? If so, how can you overcome them by setting more realistic goals?
  • What motivates you to learn this language? Do you have an interest in traveling or studying abroad or working with people who speak this language at some point in your career? These motivations will help inform the types of goals that are right for you.

Create a Timeline

Once you’ve identified your goals, it’s time to make a plan for achieving them. The best way to set a timeline is to work backward from the date on which you’d like to reach each goal. For example, if you and your child agree on a goal to reach a specific level by a certain date, it makes it easier for you to plan lessons and schedule their daily language learning.

Identifying how you feel (or how your child feels) with the timeline is important and will allow you to make adjustments. If your child feels overwhelmed, you should adjust the timeline to ensure that they enjoy the process. For adults and children alike, when learning makes us feel overwhelmed, we are less likely to reach our goals as we start seeing learning as a chore instead of an exciting learning opportunity.

One of the great things about the Sagebooks App is that you can adjust study time & dates according to your needs and see the recalculated completion date. This allows for flexibility, which is key for language learning.

Use These Tips to Keep Yourself Motivated As You Learn a New Language

  • Write down your goals in a journal or document. This can be helpful because it puts them into a tangible form, allowing you to see how they change over time. Try to make sure that your goals are realistic but also not so easy.
  • Try to find a language learning partner for yourself or your child. Being able to collaborate with someone who is working towards a common goal will increase your motivation and drive accountability.
  • When things get hard, don’t get discouraged. When we feel challenged, that means that we are learning. Learning something new can be fun, enlightening, challenging, and motivating, but it is rarely very easy.

A Few More Things to Keep In Mind

Language learning is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. It’s also a great way to create a more interesting life for yourself, and it can be a lot of fun. If you or your child are interested in learning a language, be patient with yourselves.

Learning a new language is much more complex than many could imagine. You’ll want to celebrate efforts along the way and remember that consistency will pay off.
