Journaling for Small Children | Sagebooks Hong Kong

Learning and Mindset: Journaling for Small Children

Journaling is a great way to get your children excited about writing, and it also helps them prepare for school. We have found that journaling can be just as beneficial for smaller children as it is for older learners. By journaling with your child regularly, you are helping them develop their writing skills and encourage them to express their feelings creatively.

Here are a few tips on how to make the most of journaling time with your little ones!

Find the Perfect Journal

Involve your child in the process of purchasing their own journal. When you love your journal, it’s easier to want to use it. Allow your child to decorate it with stickers or whatever item they want to use to customize it.

Allow Your Child to Choose Topics

Allow your child to choose their own topics and discuss them openly with you before they start journaling. (e.g., “Tell me something good that happened today?”) When we ask these types of questions, we allow our children to focus on the positive while embracing other emotions as well.

Encourage Them to Incorporate Drawing

Drawing is a great form of self-expression, as we’ve seen when we discussed mindset through art, and can be a helpful tool while doing mindset work. While journaling, if they can’t seem to find anything that they want to write about, encourage them to draw.

There you have it! At this point, you should be fully equipped to start journaling with your child. Remember that the key is to keep things fun and engaging while still allowing them to express themselves freely and without pressure. Come back in a few days for another learning and mindset sprint post.

Here are some comics that we recommend reading with your child this week.

We look forward to seeing you next week for more learning and mindset tips.
