According to the Chinese, wood is one of the five basic elements. The other four are: metal, water, fire, earth.
Wood is something concrete that the child can touch. It is relatively easy for the child to distinguish the differences between wood and other materials. In our everyday life, many things are made of wood. We can make use of these wooden objects to help children understand the concept of 木部 (the wood bushou).
Some characters of the 木部, however, carry abstract meanings. Characters such as 樂 (happy, music), 樣 (appearance), 極 (extreme), etc. can be difficult for children to understand. It is OK to simply present the characters to them at this stage.
Below is a summary of all the characters of the 木部 from the Basic Chinese 500 course. We recommend you to do a summary or revision when your child completes the Building Reader, and the Fluent Reader. (Download link is at the end of this post below.)
Many children would misunderstand the character 條 as 人部. Please point it out to your child that it is in fact 木部.
Often, the 木部 is written either on the left or at the bottom.
Some characters would maintain the same pronunciation even when the bushou is changed. Others might vary to a certain degree but retain the overall similarity. Point these out to your child to improve their phonological sensitivity.
Some characters becomes a different character when their bushou is changed.
Yet some characters, once their bushou is changed, become a non-existing (wrong) character entirely.
Constant practice is essential for learning new languages!
Learning is directly related to repetition structure. By creating a schedule, you’ll help your kids perceive the learning process as another daily habit in their regular routine.
