What do you say if we can learn language and maths at the same time? In this story, there are 4 idioms. Every one of them is made up of at least one number. All of the characters in these idioms are all taught in the course:

  • 一本正經 (being dead serious)
  • 二話不說 (not another single word)
  • 三更半夜 (in the dead of night. There are 2 numbers in this idiom: 三 [three], and 半 [half].)
  • 四海為家 (to feel at home anywhere, to roam about unconstrained)

This kind of language games has been very popular since ancient times among scholars. Apart from idioms, it also appears in couplets and poetry. There are many common, everyday used idioms that are in this pattern. Below are some further examples. How many of them do you and your children know?

  • 五音不全 (tone deaf)
  • 六親不認 (no consideration of relations, to show no mercy)
  • 七上八下* (perturbed state of mind)
  • 四方八面* (in all directions)
  • 九死一生* (a narrow escape)
  • 十全十美* (perfect)

All the characters used above are taught in the course. It is very effective to learn new things with knowledge that the child already grasped. To learn more Chinese idioms in the same way, we recommend Idioms in Comic.

*Each of these idioms contains two numbers.
