Start to read independently with these short comic stories, all written in characters that the child has learnt from Basic Chinese 500 course. The stories in this series include history, classic, language learning, science, humour, and more.
Each story comes with some background information. It would be a great opportunity for parents to engage children in related discussions.
Let us read the comic story first. Ask your child to come up with their answers. The answers and explanations are at the bottom.
Here are the answers to the questions:
Q1: True
Fish do not have eyelids, so technically they never shut their eyes, not even in their sleep.
Q2: False
Although buffalo and hippopotamus are called 水牛 and 河馬 respectively, they live on land. Buffalos need to spend a lot of time in water to release their body heat. Hippopotamuses have very tender skin (surprised?) so they need to stay in water to keep their skin hydrated.
Q3: True AND False
Peaches grown on trees. However, watermelons are too heavy so they grow on the ground.
Q4: True
2048 will be a leap year and there will be 366 days. Leap year happens once every 4 years. Usually, it’s a leap year when the number of the year is divisible by 4. However, there are exceptions: 2000 was a leap year, whereas 1700, 1800, 1900 were not.
